Phrase of the day: Chromatic Aberration
Otherwise known as huge pain in my butt…. But I’ll get to that later.
This morning I woke up at 5:45am to catch and photograph the coming sunset over Ushuaia. The sight was absolutely spectacular and totally worth the early wake up. Not only was the sunrise amazing, but we were surrounded by some gorgeous mountains and a pod of orcas swam right up along side the ship for a few minutes.
We docked in Ushuaia in at 9:00am and boarded the catamaran for our journey down the Beagle Channel. We visited the local light house and had the chance to see the Sea Lions beached around Light House. There were also lots of birds. Lots and lots of birds. That’s where the chromatic aberration comes in. The genius I am was too lazy to put his UV filter on his lens, which led to a lot of purple fringe around the birds and purple specs on the water flares. Oh well, just means many hours to come in photoshop.
One think I found really interesting was the way the albatross could have to run across the water to catch the wind currents off the water. It makes a really funny slapping sound as they sprint long the top.
After enduring some crazy wind burn (always happens to me), the catamaran docked in the National Park of Tierra Del Fuego where we traveled around for more photos and learned of the nearby borders shared with Chile. The final stop of the expedition was to the southerns most post office at the “End of the World”.
The scenery was absolutely amazing the entire expedition. The mountains are spectacular down here!
We spent some extra time in downtown Ushuaia and enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant. You would be surprised how many stray dogs were just sleeping on the sidewalk, a couple even started following us. Good thing they were nice dogs, and no, I did not pet them, however tempting it was.
We returned to the ship before setting sail again and shall hit the hay early before our early wake up to see Cape Horn, Chile.
