Loaded onto the bus this morning around 7:45am and settled in for the 3 hour bus ride ahead of us to Punta Tombo.
The ticket said “bumpy bus ride” and boy were they right. We bounced and swerved through the desert of Puerto Madryn, kicking up dust the whole way. A pattern of which alarmed many of the passengers during the journey.
We arrived at Punta Tombo with lovely 32 degree C weather and quickly began to see the thousands of Magellanic Penguins in store. The penguins walked all around us not worrying about our existence while they took shelter in the shade of nearby bushes or warmed themselves in the heat of the sun as they malted.
There were also wild Guanas, or as I call them “Fake Llamas”. They look very similar to Llamas, but they have hair instead of fur. Quite interesting creatures.
Once we had seen the thousands and thousands of penguins Punta Tombo had to offer we loaded onto the bus and went through the 3 hour drive once again.
When we returned to the ship I was also able to get a couple pictures of what I call the “Elephant Graveyard”. It consisted of at least a dozen abandoned ships that have just been left to deteriorate along the shore of Puerto Madryn. Unfortunately I was unable to get closer as we were supposedly in an industrial zone but I can only imagine the amazing photos I could have gotten up close.
One more sea day before our arrival in Montevideo, Uruguay.
