Exploring Hawaii

It has been an incredibly lovely time here in Hawaii. Lovely weather and maybe a little too much sun.

On Sunday we visited a nearby area of the reef and went snorkelling for the first time. It was incredibly to see so many tropical fish up close in person, and even more cool to see sea turtle up close too! You can see more of this adventure in the video below:

Afterwards we visited the Mountain Thunder coffee plantation and enjoyed a tour of the facility as we were walked through the process of harvesting, cleaning and roasting the coffee beans. On top, we were treated to many sample of various coffee roasts. A very nice way to get your caffeine fix for the day.

Our most ambitious adventure however came on Monday when we visited Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with the goal of seeing lava.

To begin, we rented bikes and supposedly rode 10 miles to the look out point where you can see the lava pouring into the ocean. We took our time observing this unique spot and then continued on foot into the rigorous plain of hardened lava flows in hopes of seeing an active flow up close. That trek became a much longer experience than expected. What should have taken us 35 minutes had taken us over an hour to find the tiniest bit of lava. Despite the length of the journey it was still neat to see, we snapped our photos, then began our trek back. Once we were back on our bikes, the journey began to be a bit more then expected for some of our group, who walked up all of the hills with their bikes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure, especially being on a bike again. Hawaii has been great, but the time has now come to an end. So long!
