Buenos Aires Day 2

Updated: Jul 6, 2019

Day 2 of my world travels with my Grandma, today we started our morning with a tour of the city of Buenos Aires.

We started off by visiting a large piece of art known as “Generic Flower”. This giant flower is made out of the same metals as used on airplanes, and opens depending on how much sun there is. It remained fairly closed as it was a fairly overcast day.

We then visited the San Martin Plaza de Mayo that is considered to be the birthplace of the country. The plaza is surrounded by several important Government institutions including the National Bank and Case Posada. The most interaction of these building in my opinion was the Cathedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, the church which was the seat of Pope Francis before his current Papal Career. The exterior of this cathedral reminded me a lot of the church in the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem, and the interior was very interesting with approximately 8 different altars, most of them depicting different stages of Jesus’ life.

During our time in the San Martin Plaza it started to rain a bit and taking photos became an increasingly difficult activity throughout the tour as I constantly struggled to keep the lens dry. So please forgive the blotches in many of my photos from the day.

The tour brought us to an area of the city known as La Boca next. La Boca is an incredible colourful and beautiful area where all of the buildings are painted in bright colours. This tradition comes from the early days of establishment where the only colours the local had to paint their homes with was the leftover paint that came in on the ships.

After the tour we boarded the ship that we will be living on for the next 2 weeks. I think I may be the only passenger between the ages of 10-35 on board. At dinner we were given a window seat so we can see the scenery each night as we dine. The couple beside us is on their 56th cruise in 7 years. They said they’ve been home a maximum of 2 months since retiring in 2010.

After dinner we listened to a dubstep violinist, a performance I was sceptical of at first, but it turned out to be fairly impressive for a live dubstep performance. I constantly wondered though what the crowd of seniors thought of this music that typically caters o my generation.

The last thing I did was my night was watch the historic Super Bowl game between the Falcons and Patriots. I don’t have a specific team I root for, but I found the comeback of the Patriots quite impressive and entertaining.

Now for 3 Days at sea before our arrival in Ushuaia.
